Inifinite possibilities... my ass
Just watched "The Golden Compass", a movie which is based on a book. The theory behind this book as far as I could gather from the movie is that there are multiple dimensions. For those who have never watched a series like "Sliders" which is also based on this theory, here it is in short:
At any moment of time there are a number of actions we can take. For instance I can choose to not write this blog and go to bed. Or I can continue to write this blog and inspire someone to become the next Einstein or drive him to become a mass murderer.
Considering there are more options for me then the 2 stated, and writing a blog takes a while and thus can be considered "multiple moments", there are an infinite number of possibilities. Those moments are not only for me but for every sentient being in this world. The theory states that all of these possibilities do happen and that at every of those moments a side dimension forms that has the same history up until the point of change as others.
So at this moment there could be an earth where dinosaurs thrive, an earth that had a 3rd world war where only insects survive since man had nuked itself into extinction, etc, etc.
My guess why this theory exists: People are not happy. No one is completely happy for their entire existence. It is nice to believe that somewhere out there there is a dimension where you have loads of money, all the loving people around you care and you sleep in a bed of roses. A dimension where everything has gone right for you from day one.
I say bullshit. This is a theory that makes no sense. People don't question this much since it can not be proven anyway. I however think it is bullshit. I say for every possibility at any moment in time there is only ONE and no more then one outcome. We are all made out of energy. Whether you think it is matter like water, calcium, protein, etc.. or if you look at it at a smaller level; protons, electrons and neutrons (or even smaller).. or if you say we are all build out of cosmical, mystical energy which forms the soul.. it doesn't matter, it is all energy, and even for mystical energy there are some rules that apply.
The fact that I am writing this blog instead of yielding to my sleep means there is something in me that inevitably will write this blog. If you can predict everything that had influenced me since the moment I was conceived, you could have known I would write this blog. Of course at the time I was born there was no internet free for public access as it is now. Heck the word "blog" would have been seen as a curse word of some kind in those days. However chemicals in my head made me who I am today and I am the kind of person that saw that movie and had to make a blog.
In fact I watched that movie because Skavenger choose it and only because she heared about it from some friend. (Besides the point here, don't take the effort to watch that movie, it isn't worth it)
But as my writing this blog could have been predicted, so could the internet have been. In fact it was. No doubt some nerds predicted it (as was predicted people would never have the use for a computer of their own... the guy saying that had not all the info obviously).
A more obvious example; people are trying to predict the weather.
Now the interesting thing is, the thing that makes me convinced that that "infinite possiblities" thing is a load of crap is the next:
You can prove that what I am saying is the truth. You can't prove the multi-dimension shit.
How you ask? How can we prove it!? Simple: Predict the past.
Let me explain this contradiction. The past has been and can't be predicted. The only thing that can be predicted is the future. However before you have accumulated all information you need to predict the future that information is out of date and it is worthless since everyone already knows the outcome.
Only way to prove it is to accumulate every variable that lead to an event and from that information predict what would have happened and compare it to what happened.
A couple of problems:
1: People already know the outcome or try to predict it themselves. Meaning when they have a satisfactory result they will stop and say "it is proven", which it as a matter of fact is not because of the next point;
2: So much things influence a certain event that it is impossible to be sure you have taken every detail into account when measuring the outcome. Say a metal ball would be released 10 feet in the air. You can predict it would fall to the ground. Even calculating the gravity at that point and wind speeds you can accurately say when it will hit the ground. However did you take everything into account? There might be a man walking under the ball at that point so the ball would hit the man instead of the ground. Did you take into account that a magnet that was already falling (thus having a higher velocity and overtaking the metal ball) would catch up with the metal ball, draw it to itself and then, because there is a wire attached to the magnet the ball would never touch the ground at all???
You don't know every influence so you can't test it.
3: Accumulating every bit of information takes time. The longer it takes the less accurate it will be.
4: It will cost a shitload of money and no one will care.
So can it be proven? No.
I said yes. Did I lie? No. Why not? Because theoretically it can be proven as multiple dimensions theory can not be proven... Well you can prove that by going into an other dimension and coming back, but there is no idea how to do that, while there is simple a way, however impossible, to prove that there is only one possible outcome.
As it is now nothing has been proven, nor will it, but I will stick with my opinion that there at any moment there is only ONE and ONE alone possible outcome.
So, for all moments that have past this is the outcome: NOW. Happy?
The blog entry ended here, though I must add:
Note the "Happy?" refers to the fact that there can't be some kind of alternate dimension to comfort you. (Besides if there was one would it matter since you can;t swap anyway?)
I also hope it made you think that maybe there indeed are things in your life that suck. You can at this point either accept them as fate and continue to be miserable or pick up yourself, understand that you can control your future and let this blog entry influence you into reshaping your future... which is ironic at least, wouldn't you say?
PS, some people say there is no "fate". True and false. Everything is fate. Your future is your fate. Everything that influences you, can be predicted... looking back at things. However since the future is so hard to predict everyone has a own free will to choose and do whatever they want and whatever they at that point think is best. Now aren't you glad we can't predict the future? What a boring world this would be.
